Do you ever hear people talk about gifts for Christmas this time of year?  (Of course)  What has been your most memorable Christmas gift which you have ever received?  Do you still have this gift?  You would never guess what this writer’s most memorable gift was!

For me this most memorable gift was given to me by my dad when I was about 7 years old.  As I rattled the packages for me that year, I could about guess the contents of all of them but one.  When I opened it that Christmas morning, wow was I surprised.  My dad had wrapped up for me a (you guessed it) the nice fluffy tail of a raccoon, which he had dead-i-cated the day before in our barn.  Of course I still have it —- not!

As gift giving is “on our minds” this Christmas season, so the theme of giving is very prominent in the Bible.  Words like ‘give’, ‘gift’, ‘gave’ (and the like) occur about 2,100 times.  The first mention of the concept is in Genesis 1:16 & 17 where we are told God created the sun, moon and stars to “give light to the earth”.  The last mention of the giving concept is in Revelation 22:12 when the Lord will return and “give rewards to every man according as his work shall be”.

Think of God’s gifts to every man, gifts often forgotten or taken for granted.  For example, He “gives us rain from Heaven and fruitful seasons” plus He gives “Life and breath and all things,”  Acts 14:17 & 17:25.  And add to all these things, He gives “every good and perfect gift” which comes down from above from a God Who never changes, Jas. 1:17.  Wow!  That is a “bunch” of giving!!  Have you thanked Him today for these and other gifts which He has given to you???

However, we must still talk about THE GIFT from God that also just keeps on giving!  You can guess what this one is.  It is “wrapped up” in the one well known Bible verse John 3:16 – “For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whosoever believes on Him (as Savior) might not perish, but have everlasting life.”  One author, Henry Morris, summed up this greatest of gifts this way – “It was the greatest gift because it met the greatest need, revealed the greatest love, and had the greatest scope and purpose of any gift that could ever be conceived in the heart of an omniscient Creator.”

And this was not the end of His giving.  “He spared not His own Son, but delivered Him up” (to die on the cross and rise again) “for us all” (to pay the penalty for our sins), “how shall He not with Him also freely give us all things? (Rom. 8:32).  Here is one gift not found on store shelves anywhere this Christmas season.

One last thought.  THE GIFT (Salvation and eternal life through faith in Jesus Christ) is of NO VALUE to any person until he/she accepts/receives it.  A great tragedy is that many people today have not received this ‘greatest’ of gifts, but have simply ignored it or have counted it as of little value!

Life Application Questions for YOU!!!     Q1-How about you?  Have you trusted Jesus Christ by faith as your Savior?  OR  have you rejected Him?  John 1:12 says, “As many as received Him to them gave He the power to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on His Name.”  (That’s Good News in a sad news world!)  Receiving Him as Savior make the lights shine brighter this season, especially Nativity Scenes!!!!
Q2-What Gift(s) are you giving to the Lord Jesus this Christmas, since it is His birthday which we are celebrating?? (seed thought for this article from devotional book – Days of Praise,  12/25/10
